Why Tucson International Academy is Fundraising for Sports

We feel that sports are very very important in the character-building of children. More than anything, we want to make sure that our students grow up to be outstanding members of the community. If they don’t have an example to follow, it’s really hard for them to do that. We want to set those examples for our students, whether it’s in the classroom, outside of school at sporting events or in this case, playing organized sports. A lot of our students have never played organized sports. So we’re trying to give them the experience of being on a team, showing them leadership, being on a schedule, being on time, being more professional, and more responsible. It’s kind of hard to find a field that’s safe for them because you can’t always know how well a field has been maintained. We don't want the kids to twist a knee or break an ankle by stumbling in a hole. The fields we are using now are not always located in safe situations. We want the parents to feel confident that they are dropping their kids off in a place where nothing is going to happen to them. Goal - Fundraising for Sports Field We need our own proper field. As you can see right now, our students are practicing on a field that has very little lighting. We usually practice until daylight ends. Once we run out of daylight, that’s the end of our practice. Other charter schools also want to use good facilities, and when we find one, we can’t always reserve it when we need it because we’re not the only ones using it. And there are very few facilities in Tucson that can accommodate all the students we have. In addition to competing against other charter schools for sports fields, we’re competing against other leagues as well. It creates a big shortage for all of our students and all of the kids here in Tucson. Our goal is to raise the necessary funds to build a field by our school with the amenities for the students to have a safe environment where they can practice their sports.  Not only will it benefit the students from our charter school but it will also benefit many other charter schools here as well. TIA’s Summer Facebook Contest! Win-A-Book Wednesday!

A must-have in every beach bag is some good summer reading!  Whether you head to the beach, a nearby pool or just find a delightfully air conditioned space, escaping into a great book is an essential activity to get away from  the heat. There’s nothing like joining author Jack London on a snowy Alaskan adventure to cool down a blistering Tucson summer day! So in the spirit of celebrating the great summer activity of reading, TIA is sponsoring Win-a-Book Wednesday on their Facebook page this summer. The contest will start on Wednesday, June 7th, 2017 and will run for eight consecutive weeks until July 26th.

How the Contest Works

Here’s how it will work. Every Wednesday TIA will post 3-4 clues about a well known children’s or teen book on their Facebook page. In the comments under the post, everyone can guess what book matches that set of clues. The names of all the people who have given the right response will be put into a hat. A winner will be chosen at random from all those that gave the correct answer. The winner of each round will be announced the following Tuesday on our Facebook page.

Great Weekly Prizes!

After we announce the winner each Tuesday, that person will private message us their email address. Once we receive the winner’s email address, TIA will send them a gift e-card worth $20 to Barnes and Noble! They can spend their $20 any way they choose at the Barnes and Noble website and have it shipped directly to their house! Sample Hints Let’s say our first set of hints about a book are: 1) a monkey 2) a man in a yellow hat 3) the big city Then let’s say in the comments below this post we receive a total of 40 guesses of which book we’re hinting at. However only 20 of the 40 people guess the correct book, Curious George. We take the names of the 20 people that answered Curious George, put them in a hat, and at random choose the winner who will receive the $20 gift card to Barnes and Noble. Again, the contest will begin on Wednesday, June 7th, with the first set of hints being posted on TIA’s facebook page. Then don’t forget to check our Facebook page every Wednesday all summer to see a new set of hints. We will announce the winner from the week prior each Tuesday.

Happy Summer Reading!

A for Arizona

Dear Ms. Enriquez and Ms. Herrera, As you hopefully know by now, Arizona was cited by Education Cities today as a state that is leading the nation in closing our achievement gap, and we have attached our press release about that report here. To your great creditTIA West Tucson Charter School Campus has been identified as top performer in the state, and somewhere that low-wealth students can expect the same excellent quality of education that their wealthier peers receive. What an amazing achievement for your students and school community, and we want to thank you and congratulate you! Please pass on our congratulations to your team. We are critically aware that Arizona is nowhere near our goal of offering every child in the state an excellent education that prepares them for their life choices after high school. But in your school, and in dozens of schools like yours around the state, we see that this is possible. Arizona is being recognized because you and your team decided to make this a reality. We cannot be more grateful to you. On behalf of the team at A for Arizona, bravo! To Do List for a New School Year!

Are you a list maker? There’s nothing quite like a list. It can help you organize your thoughts, break down overwhelming activities into easier, bite-sized tasks, and then there’s that wonderful sense of accomplishment as things get checked off! Here’s a to do list from the staff at Tucson International Academy to help you prepare for a new school year. Some things on this list are not items you’d expect, so read carefully!
  • Start getting ready for school now. This not only means getting your uniform, school supplies, and transportation lined up, but also get your brain ready! Start establishing a routine that is more in line with your school day. Also begin to transition from electronics to books. Electronics can be creativity killers! Get your synapses firing by ending the summer with one last terrific book!
  • Parents, be sure to keep up with medicine regulations. If your child requires an over the counter medicine, such as Tylenol, during the school day, be sure to provide a brand new bottle every year. Medicines must be in their original packaging.
  • Bring all your school supplies from the school supply list for your grade. TIA also operates a community closet of school supplies. So students are asked to double up on items and donate the extras to the community closet. The need is especially high for often used items such as tissues, pencils, folders.
  • Know what is being served for lunch! This is especially important for kids with food allergies. If something is being served that you cannot have, be sure to pack a lunch for that day.
  • Decide to keep up with your homework right from the start! That way you won’t lose recess or free time at school catching up on past assignments.
  • If you make a mistake or do something wrong, just own it. It will be discovered anyway so it’s best just just to tell someone and move on from there.
  • Be yourself! This reminder is especially true for those new to TIA. Our school is not not like other schools in Tucson. You do not need to come to school with your defences up, hiding behind a facade of who you think you should be. We want you; just as you are! You will find the more relaxed and natural you are, the easier it will be for you to make friends and succeed at TIA.

TIA is a great place for your child to start a new school year! Enroll online today!

School Is Starting Soon

Six Questions You May Have about Going Back to School and Other Important Information for the 2014 School Year!

School is starting soon - August 6th! How did you feel about the first day of school as a child? Were you the type to have your clothes laid out three days in advance? Were your new school supplies in neat and colorful stacks?  Or did the last day of vacation find you running around outside trying to wring out every last drop of summertime freedom? Some kids can’t wait for school to start and others dread it. Most kids feel some combination of excitement and anxiety. What can you do to help your child have a terrific first day of school? Meet Your Teacher: Monday, August 4, 2014   3:00 - 5:00 pm Mandatory Orientation ( 7th - 12th graders) Monday, August 4, 2014   5:00 - 6:00 pm First Day of School : Wednesday,  August 6, 2014   8:30 am - 3:00 pm

Reduce the Unknowns

First, help your child know what to expect. Even wonderful events can cause stress if they are filled with too many unknowns. For our returning Tucson International Academy students this should not be difficult. They have experienced the family-like atmosphere of their TIA campus and already have a good idea how to navigate their first day. Yet each new grade holds some fresh challenges, so it is important to listen for any questions your child may have.  For kindergarteners and new students to TIA, it is especially important they feel confident that they know where to go, what to do, how to dress and whom to ask for help.

When Can I Meet My Teacher?

We’ve scheduled a Meet Your Teacher event on all  four campuses  for Monday, August 4, 2014, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Parents and students in all grades (K-12) are highly encouraged to attend this event on the specific campus their child will be attending. The students will be able to meet their teacher, see their classroom, and can bring in their school supplies. If you haven’t already provided your child’s birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of address, you can bring them that afternoon and complete any other remaining enrollment paper work. Many questions will be answered for you and your child during this time, so we see this as a great opportunity to remove several of the “first day of school” unknowns. Immediately following the Meet Your Teacher event the evening of August 4, there is a Mandatory Orientation on each of the four campuses from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. for 7th through 12th grade students only.

When Does School Start?

The first day of school on all four Tucson International Academy campuses is Wednesday, August 6, 2014. Our school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m

How Should I Dress?

The uniforms at Tucson International Academy consist of navy blue slacks, walking shorts, or knee-length skirts. We wear collared polo type shirts in white or light blue. Shirts with the Tucson International Academy emblem are available for $12 for youth sizes and $14 for adult sizes on every campus. All students should wear tennis shoes to school.

What Should I Bring?

The school supply list is available through our website. Some of the items on the supply list are shared with the classroom. Supplies can be brought to school on “Meet Your Teacher” day or on the first day of school.

Where Do I Go?

Every TIA campus has an open patio area where all grades gather at the beginning of each school day. If your child does not know where the patio area is on the campus, “Meet Your Teacher” day is a great opportunity to find out where to go. For students having breakfast at school, the meal starts at 8:00 a.m. in this patio area. At 8:30 a.m. all students should be present for announcements and the pledge of allegiance. Students will head to their classes immediately afterward.

Who Should I Ask For Help?

Teachers or administrators will be happy to assist you or your child at any time while you’re on campus. Also, feel free to call your campus administrative assistant to answer any questions you may have prior to school starting. Midvale Campus Expansion

TIA has been hard at work over the past several months—and this time, expansion is not just taking place in students’ minds. The campus at Midvale and Valencia received a Certificate of Occupancy last week signifying the completion of their renovation and expansion project! Students and staff returning this fall will enjoy the new facility’s modern design, with plenty of light and glass, as well as its updated technology, including an extensive computer lab and a private wireless network (installed by DakotaPro). But perhaps more important than the building they’ll be sitting in is the people they’ll be sitting beside: the expansion will accommodate 85 additional students, effectively tripling their size!

Midvale Campus Expansion Ready for 2012 School Year

In an area with limited options for elementary and high school education, Midvale has had a waiting list for years due to their constrained facilities. Finally, after having to delay the project for a year because of state budget cuts, the expansion is complete, and finishing touches are being brought in, such as computers and furniture. And that’s not all that’s being added—more students means more teachers, and beginning July 16, eight new teachers will arrive for orientation training.
Mike Hoppe, the school’s COO/CFO, sees it as positive that the school was able to expand in their current location: “We’ll be able to stay in the middle of where the educational need is.” Even with the additional space, he expects Midvale to continue to have a waitlist, and recommends that interested families sign up earlier rather than later.

Project Completed on time and on budget!

The architect employed for the project was Steve Shell, who is well known in Tucson for his work designing educational facilities. More than designing a classroom, Shell’s plans encompassed everything from the parking lot to the playground. According to Mike Hoppe, Shell navigated city and state requirements “flawlessly,” obtaining all the necessary permits in a timely fashion. In fact, it would seem that the expansion was seemingly without the “growing pains” typically associated with construction projects. The project was completed “on time and on budget,” Hoppe reported. Which is good, since it’s almost time for Midvale students to get back to their new school.
