How did you feel about the first day of school as a child? Were you the type to have your clothes laid out three days in advance? Were your new school supplies in neat and colorful stacks? Or did the last day of vacation find you running around outside trying to wring out every last drop of summertime freedom? Some kids can’t wait for school to start and others dread it. Most kids feel some combination of excitement and anxiety. What can you do to help your child have a terrific first day of school?
Reduce the Unknowns
First, help your child know what to expect. Even wonderful events can cause stress if they are filled with too many unknowns. For our returning Tucson International Academy students this should not be difficult. They have experienced the family-like atmosphere of their TIA campus and already have a good idea how to navigate their first day. Yet each new grade holds some fresh challenges, so it is important to listen for any questions your child may have. For kindergarteners and new students to TIA, it is especially important they feel confident where to go, what to do, how to dress and whom to ask for help. · When Does School Start and End, and When Can I Meet My Teacher? The first day of school on all four Tucson International Academy campuses is August 7, 2013. Our school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. We’ve scheduled a Meet Your Teacher event on each of our four campuses for Monday, August 5, 2013 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Parents and students in all grades (K-12) are highly encouraged to attend this event on the specific campus their child will be attending. The students will be able to meet their teacher, see their classroom and can bring in their school supplies. Immediately following the Meet Your Teacher event, there is a Mandatory Orientation on each of the four campuses from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. for 7ththrough 12th grade students only. If you haven’t already provided your child’s birth certificate, immunization records and proof of address, you can bring them that afternoon and complete any other remaining enrollment paper work. Many questions will be answered for you and your child during this time, so we see this as a great opportunity to remove several of the “first day of school” unknowns. · How Should I Dress? The uniforms at Tucson International Academy consist of navy blue slacks, walking shorts, or knee-length skirts. We wear collared polo type shirts in white or light blue. Shirts with the Tucson International Academy emblem are available for $12 for youth sizes and $14 for adult sizes on every campus. All students should wear tennis shoes to school. · What Should I Bring? The school supply list is available through our website. Some of the items on the supply list are shared with the classroom. Supplies can be brought to school on “Meet Your Teacher” day or on the first day of school. · Where Do I Go? Every TIA campus has an open patio area where all grades gather at the beginning of each school day. If your child does not know where the patio area is on the campus, “Meet Your Teacher” day is a great opportunity to find out where to go. For students having breakfast at school, the meal starts at 8:00 a.m. in this patio area. At 8:30 a.m. all students should be present for announcements and the pledge of allegiance. Students will head to their classes immediately afterward. · Who Should I Ask For Help? Teachers or administrators will be happy to assist you or your child at any time while you’re on campus. Also, feel free to call your campus administrative assistant to answer any questions you may have prior to school starting.
